Museum Schokland tells the story of a unique part of the Netherlands. This remarkable area has its origins in the Penultimate Glacial Period, with a history of habitation going back 10,000 years. In the permanent exhibition, visitors are guided through the centuries, as Schokland’s story comes to life. The exceptional archaeological finds highlighted in the exhibition make history tangible.
The modern presentation allows visitors to literally embark on a journey through the history of Schokland, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1995. At the museum, visitors can learn about 10,000 years of human habitation, the harsh island life, and the ongoing battle against water. They will also experience how, after the land reclamation, Schokland became an island on dry land. The numerous archaeological discoveries illustrate how people lived on the boundary between land and water.
Unique to the museum are 4,000-year-old footprints from an adult and a child, some of the oldest footprints in Europe, and they are the museum’s pride.
Naturally, the exhibition also includes space for young explorers with interactive presentations for children.
