Museum Schokland launches new, more accessible website
Museum Schokland has launched a new website. With the renewed website, the museum takes an important step in the field of digital accessibility. The website is more readable, information is easier to find, and the collection of Museum Schokland is also being gradually made available digitally. The new website can be found at www.museumschokland.nl.
In the development of the new website, the current requirements for digital accessibility have been taken into account. For example, visitors can adjust the font size and contrast. Images are also provided with alt texts, so the content of the website is more accessible to people who use assistive technology, such as a screen reader. All information is available in both Dutch and English. The website has been developed by The Cre8ion Lab.
Information more easily findable
In addition to improved readability, the structure of the website has also been renewed. This allows visitors to find the information they are looking for more quickly and easily, for example, about a visit to the museum, the history of Schokland, and the activities of Museum Schokland.
An important part of the new website is the Accessibility page. Here, information about the physical accessibility of Museum Schokland can be found in one place. This way, visitors can better prepare for their visit in advance.
First step in digital accessibility of the collection
With the new website, a start has also been made with the digital accessibility of the collection of Museum Schokland. Part of the collection can be viewed and discovered online. This digital collection presentation will be further expanded and developed in the coming period. Making World Heritage accessible
During the World Heritage Congress on May 8, 2026, at the Gevangenismuseum Veenhuizen, the central question was: how do we make World Heritage accessible? Museum Schokland has taken this question into its own organization. Besides researching the physical accessibility of the museum, there is increasingly more attention to digital accessibility.
The new website is a first concrete step in this direction. With a more accessible website, clear information about a visit, and the first digital accessibility of the collection, Museum Schokland aims to make the stories of World Heritage site Schokland reachable and accessible to as many people as possible.
