A journey through time, water, and culture

Stories of 10,000 years of living with water at a UNESCO World Heritage Site

Since 1995

UNESCO World Heritage site Schokland

The former island of Schokland and the surrounding post-war reconstruction landscape tell the story of 10,000 years of living with water in the Netherlands. The soil contains a wealth of archaeological treasures, giving the Schokland World Heritage Site the longest history of human habitation in the Netherlands. Schokland and its surroundings have been included on UNESCO’s World Heritage List since 1995.
