Schokland: 10,000 years of living with water
The museum is located on the Middelbuurt, one of the ancient dwelling mounds (terpen) of the island. Here, you can discover how Schokland was formed, how people lived there, and why the island was ultimately abandoned in 1859.
In the exhibition, you will see:
- archaeological finds
- maps, photos, and video materials
- tools from the island period
A remarkable highlight is the footprints that are 4,000 years old. These are close to Schokland and are among the oldest in Western Europe. This brings the past very close.
Outdoor area
There is also much to see and do outside. The museum grounds are about one hectare and are full of special places:
- the historic Enserkerk from 1834, now a national monument
- remains of the historical palisade and dikes
- stone water wells where drinking water was once stored
- a reconstructed palisade against the water and houses in 'Zuiderzee style'
- a monumental old 'ice runners' shed', hidden between the buildings
Together, they provide a good picture of the remarkable history of the area.

- rent a bike (€3.50 per bike per hour) and cycle around Schokland (about 10 kilometers)
- pick up a free cycling and walking route at the cash register and walk around the edge of the former island (about 10 kilometers)
- visit the harbor of old-Emmeloord

Schokland is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. This means that this place is unique in the world. Here you can see how the Netherlands has been living with water for centuries, supported by the many archaeological finds.
