Telling in the church
In the church of Museum Schokland, students listen to the story of Jannetje de Graaf from Schokland. She tells about life on the island in the last period it was inhabited by the Schokker fishermen until the evacuation in 1859. The class may receive a letter from Jannetje in advance.
Museum assignment
Using assignment cards, students examine parts of the museum collection. With the assignments, students research different periods when Schokland was inhabited, such as prehistory and the island period. On the outdoor area of the Middelbuurt, they discover several artworks that are also related to this history.
Troubadour
At the northernmost point of the former island, students meet the troubadour who tells and sings strong stories from the past of the Schokkers. He accompanies himself on the accordion, and based on the lyrics, students get a musical impression of the harsh life of the fishermen of the Zuiderzee and reflect on a few moral questions.
Visual workshop
At the Old Harbor, students learn about the history of this place when the island Schokland was inhabited by the Schokkers, a tough fishing people. Together with the visual art teacher, they create their own artwork, inspired by the landscape in the immediate vicinity and the expressionist paintings that Ernst Leyden made around 1900 of the fishermen of the Zuiderzee.
