Museum Schokland presents program Month of History
Museum Schokland is also participating again this year in October in the National History Month. Under the national theme Body and Mind, the museum at UNESCO World Heritage site Schokland organizes a special, free activity every Saturday. Through conversations, music, and guided tours, stories about resilience, isolation, cohabitation, and the daily existence of people on Schokland and in Flevoland will be addressed.
The theme Body and Mind invites us to look at what life in the past physically and mentally demanded of people. There are many stories to tell at World Heritage Schokland about this. Residents lived for centuries with water, poverty, and uncertainty. The disappearance of the Zuiderzee and the emergence of Flevoland also had consequences for the people who lived and worked here.
The Last Lightkeeper - Saturday, October 3
Theater maker Liset Moerdijk from Prins te Paard will discuss the audio tour The Last Lightkeeper in a round-table conversation. Bas Visscher will talk about the history of the lonely and responsible life of the lightkeepers of Schokland. What does isolation do to a person when vigilance is necessary day and night? After the conversation, participants will walk together to the southern tip of Schokland. Start: 4:00 PM in the Museum Church.
Concert Lecture Old Sea, New Land - Saturday, October 10
Writer and historian Eva Vriend, along with soprano Klaartje van Veldhoven and accordionist Renée Bekkers, brings the history of the Zuiderzee and Flevoland to life. Stories about fishermen, engineers, and peat pioneers are interspersed with singing and music. Old Sea, New Land starts at 3:00 PM and is organized in collaboration with the Province of Flevoland.
Guided tour northern Schokland - Saturday, October 17
Museum staff member Bas Visscher will take visitors through the northern part of Schokland: Emmeloord. The walk is approximately five kilometers long and the tour lasts about two hours. Start: 2:00 PM.
Guided tour southern Schokland - Saturday, October 24
Museum staff member Bas Visscher will take visitors through the southern part of Schokland: Ens. The walk is approximately six kilometers long and the tour lasts more than two hours. Start: 2:00 PM.
Schokker and Urker domestic workers - Saturday, October 31
Historian Lucia de Vries will conclude the month with stories of Urker (and Schokker!) women who went to work as maids elsewhere. Based on her years of research, she highlights an often-overlooked part of women's history. What expectations, duties, and dreams did these young women carry with them when they left their familiar community? Start: 2:00 PM.
