A Schokker Meal
The idea for Pancake Day originated in the Area Committee, an executive body representing all parties involved with UNESCO World Heritage Site Schokland. Museum Schokland, the Municipality of Noordoostpolder, Restaurant Schokland, and local residents took on the organization of the evening. Pancakes were a beloved meal during Schokland's island period: a simple dish often enjoyed on weekends when the fishing community gathered.
A New Tradition
With the gathering at Restaurant Schokland, the involved parties aimed to provide a low-threshold space for meeting and conversation. At long tables, neighbors enjoyed pancakes while sharing stories, experiences, and ideas about their living environment within the World Heritage area. The pancake day was experienced by attendees as a successful event. Participants went home with a clear desire to make this evening an annual tradition.
