Open Monument Day 2026

During Open Monument Day, you can visit Museum Schokland for free. The Light Keeper's House, located on the mound of Emmeloord, is also open for free visits.

On the museum grounds, you can find the national monuments Enserkerk and IJsloper. The Enserkerk dates back to 1834 and was the Dutch Reformed church of Schokland. Immediately after the land reclamation, the church was converted into a museum. Museum Schokland opened its doors in 1947, making it the oldest museum in Flevoland. In the permanent exhibition, various unique objects can be found that together tell the story of 10,000 years of living with water. Due to the special archaeology and the unique stories, Schokland was designated UNESCO World Heritage in 1995, as the first location in the Netherlands.

The IJsloperschuur is the only remaining wooden building on the museum grounds from the island period of Schokland. In this shed was the ice sledge of Schokland, which was used during harsh winters to fetch food, deliver and collect mail, and transport the sick over and across the ice. The ice sledge did not survive history, but the shed still serves as a reminder of the harsh existence during the time of the Zuiderzee.

The mound of Middelbuurt as a whole is also a national monument due to its significant archaeological value. The other mounds on Schokland are also national monuments.

The municipality of Noordoostpolder also opens the Light Keeper's House for free to the public during Open Monument Day.
