Workshop RUUM op Schokland

What can a person's belongings tell us about who they are? Can a collection of everyday objects reveal the story of someone you've never met? During this workshop, you'll explore the hidden stories contained within a special archaeological-style memory box.

The workshop begins with a short tour of the exhibition. Stieneke will talk about her installation and the creative process behind it. For this project, 100 secondary school students from Flevoland filled a small box with personal belongings. They then exchanged their boxes with one another. Using only the contents of the box, each student created an artwork that portrayed the other person, either literally or symbolically.

After the introduction, you'll create your own artwork. You'll carefully examine the contents of a mystery box and ask yourself questions such as: Who might this person be? What are their interests? Where do they come from? What memories or stories are hidden behind these objects?

Using a range of creative techniques, including found poetry, collage and cyanotype, you'll create your own artistic interpretation of the unknown person behind the objects. No previous experience is needed – curiosity and imagination are all you need.
