Description

After the draining of the Noordoostpolder, tens of thousands of clay pipe fragments were found on the former seabed.

For centuries, sailors on the Zuiderzee smoked tobacco from fragile pipes made of baked clay. When they broke, the fragments were thrown overboard.

Pipe bowls and stems can still be found around Schokland. Museum Schokland has a rich collection, of which some examples are on display.
