According to a newspaper report from that year, Ritse Jetses de Groot from the Frisian village of Grouw receives the medal for rescuing a passenger from a fishing boat at great personal risk. This reason is noted on the medal.

Since the beginning of the 19^th century, civilians who perform an extraordinary act are eligible for a special medal. This concerns the 'honorary medal for humanitarian assistance'. It is awarded by or on behalf of the monarch when there is a remarkable act of heroism or rescue involving personal danger.

On the reverse side, therefore, is the likeness of King Willem II.
