Description

This stone is embedded in the wall of the Enser Church, the Museum Church, on Schokland. The floodmark commemorates the great flood disaster in 1916. It is the last time the island is flooded. 

The flood of January 14, 1916, causes enormous destruction throughout the Zuiderzee area. The disaster prompts parliament to adopt the Zuiderzee Act in 1918. This important law regulates the construction of the Afsluitdijk and the partial reclamation of the Zuiderzee.
