Description

About 4,100 years ago, people walked along a marshy riverbank. Unknowingly, they left their footprints in the clay. The footprints were covered with sand and disappeared for a long time into the subterranean layers. They were preserved over time.

During archaeological research at Schokland, they resurfaced in 1984. A number of footprints were recovered and preserved. The footprints are among the oldest in Northwestern Europe. They are a true highlight in the museum's permanent collection.
