A cannon from the Water Board Vollenhove.

Details

Dating: unknown
Acquired: donation 1948

Description

The large cast iron cannon in the outdoor area of the Schokland museum does not belong to the remnants of the former island.

It originates from the Water Board Vollenhove, where cannons have been used since the late 18th century to fire warning shots in case of imminent danger of a breach in the old Zuiderzee dike.

They became unnecessary after the closure of the Zuiderzee in 1932.

The cannon was donated to the newly established Schokland museum by the Water Board in 1948.
