Description

Thijmen Albers Klappe is born in 1831 in Emmeloord on Schokland. Like his father, he becomes a fisherman at a young age. In 1855, Thijmen moves to Vollenhove. 

In 1916, a painter stays at Hotel Seidel. He asks Thijmen if he can make a portrait of him. This results in the painting below. Unfortunately, the name of the painter remains unknown. 

Thijmen, nicknamed ‘Ouwe Boertje’, continues to be an active fisherman until a great age. He passes away in 1922 at the age of 91 in his hometown.

The painting of ‘Ouwe Boertje’ is owned by Museum Schokland and can be seen at the Stadsmuseum Vollenhove.
