Description

This tombstone from 1594 is rightly called a ‘wanderstone’. The journey is as follows. After the dismantling of a cemetery in the Belgian city of Ghent in 1799, the stone is shipped to North Holland. There, it serves as a dyke reinforcement for the West Frisian sea dyke. During the reclamation of the test polder Andijk in 1927, the stone reappears. It lies for many years at a farmhouse and eventually ends up in Schokland.
