Description

The drinking water supply is a major problem on the island of Schokland. It is naturally surrounded by the Zuiderzee, but that is salty. To obtain fresh water, underground water reservoirs are constructed. These are fed by rainwater that falls on the roofs of the houses and is channeled to the collection basins via drainage pipes. This way, the population has access to relatively good quality drinking water. There are still 2 water cellars visible on the museum grounds.
