Description

In 1990, a prehistoric burial site dating back approximately 4600 years was excavated near Schokland. One of the graves belongs to a woman who was about 30 years old at the time of her death. Especially her skull has withstood the test of time remarkably well and has been surprisingly well preserved.

In 2021, paleo-artist Remie Bakker was commissioned to create a realistic facial reconstruction based on the skull. Remie Bakker enjoys international acclaim for his life-sized, scientifically accurate reconstructions of prehistoric animals. He is also specialized in human facial reconstructions.

This model gives this prehistoric woman literally a face. A very early inhabitant of the Noordoostpolder comes to life through this. Through a public competition, she has been named Wende. She now holds a prominent place in the museum's permanent exhibition.
