Young people making space for the other
The exhibition is part of the four-year youth project RUUM (a fantasy word for 'space'), a collaboration between Jij bent M., Museum Batavialand, and Museum Schokland. In this project, young people work with artists and heritage partners on projects about identity, environment, and the future. In 2026, the central question will be: who is the other? Under the name yourRUUM, young people explored how we relate to each other in a manageable society.
Flevoland students
Stieneke Oeverbeek and Patriek Leichtenberg, both artists with Flevoland roots, collaborated with students from Arte College Almere, X-tuur Emmeloord, Porteum Lelystad, and the RUUMclub, the youth council of RUUM. The young people engaged in workshops with stories from the province and the collections of the museums. Sounds, 'archaeological boxes', and other contributions from the youth are combined into one art installation.
RUUM
The heritage participation project RUUM is an initiative of Jij bent M. in Almere, Museum Batavialand in Lelystad, and Museum Schokland and is supported by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science. RUUM at Schokland is the second exhibition of RUUM. Young people are developing space in Flevoland to create, discover, and showcase what concerns them, drawing from the collections of the three museums. Every year, RUUM builds new projects and a new exhibition at different locations throughout the province.
